THE WORLD OF APU (1959)
Ray's poignant Apu trilogy is cinema at its most heartfelt and tender. The strong influence of the Italian Neo-realists, helped Ray create a masterful collection of films, early in his career. Pather Panchali remains the best (and for many North Americans, the very first Indian film they ever saw), but World of Apu is the most accessible and entertaining of the trilogy. It's honesty and cinematic poetry effortlessly move the viewer to tears.
